What is Disability Services Port Stephens Inc?

The organisation was originally formed in 1991 under the name “Port Stephens Caring Network” to provide a range of services to frail aged and younger people with a disability, who for various reasons required assistance to maintain a quality of life in their own homes.

Disability Services Port Stephens - Respite Care, Peer Support and Brokerage Work

In 2001 the organisation underwent restructuring in accordance with the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Cares (DADHC)* Hunter Reshaping Plan, which resulted in the separation of the frail aged services from the disability services under it’s auspice.

Disability Services Port Stephens Inc (DSPSI) became the new entity in 2001 and is now the provider of the disability specific services under its auspice. These services include Respite Care, Peer Support and Brokerage Work to younger people with a disability and their carers, living in the Port Stephens Local Government Area.

Disability Services Port Stephens Inc is a not for profit organisation managed by a dedicated, skilled and caring volunteer management committee.

Disability Services Port Stephens staff include a Coordinator, Administration Officer, Activity Officer, and Skilled Support Workers. Our Peer Support Program is based on a volunteer model. Volunteers play a pivotal role, and are key contributors to the successful operation of the Peer Support Program.

* On 1'st July 2009, the Public Sector Employment and Management (Departmental Amalgamations)Order 2009 became effective, establishing the Department of Human Services as a division of Government Service and removing all branches from the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care and adding them to the newly established Department of Human Services.
